{"id":55,"date":"2011-03-15T09:40:25","date_gmt":"2011-03-15T15:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.properwichita.com\/consulting\/?p=55"},"modified":"2011-03-30T07:38:06","modified_gmt":"2011-03-30T13:38:06","slug":"acrobat-reader-x-the-it-consultants-view","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.properwichita.com\/consulting\/2011\/03\/15\/acrobat-reader-x-the-it-consultants-view\/","title":{"rendered":"Acrobat Reader X &#8211; The IT Consultant&#8217;s View"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Take a look at your Adobe Acrobat Reader the next time you open a PDF.\u00a0 Hit the Help-&gt;About and check your version number.\u00a0 You might be surprised at how far behind you have become.<\/p>\n<p>Is it bad to be behind?\u00a0 In a word, yes.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go over some of the reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Security<\/strong> &#8211; One of the things that change as the version numbers increase is the level of security.\u00a0 Is Reader X more secure than Reader 6?\u00a0 This is a relative point.\u00a0 X is more secure than 6, simply because the bad element out there has had more time to poke at version 6 to find the holes.\u00a0 If you are this far behind, there&#8217;s a lot of holes that have been patched by updated versions that are still a vulnerability on your machine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features<\/strong> &#8211; Reader has had to become more functional as time passes.\u00a0 While Adobe reserved the ability to create PDF files in the past to its paid product, third-party tools to provide that functionality has made it move to the free product.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compatibility <\/strong>&#8211; This one is a double-edged sword.\u00a0 IT consultants tend to want to upgrade things.\u00a0 It&#8217;s our job.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also our job to make sure we&#8217;re not hindering the system.\u00a0 Some applicatons may create PDF files that are not compatible with the newer version.\u00a0 The same is true for the reverse.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re seeing PDF files that you regularly can&#8217;t open, you might want to check your version.\u00a0 If you have an older version, upgrade.\u00a0 If you have the newest version, you might have to swing back the other way.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Overall, I recommend upgrading to Adobe X as soon as your related applications will support it.\u00a0 If you aren&#8217;t sure, it can easily be tested.\u00a0 The new platform is much more secure and will benefit your organization in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>We can visit your site and give you an overview of your current application levels and make recommendations.\u00a0 You might just find what all those &#8220;you need to update x&#8221; popups mean and which ones you can make disappear.\u00a0 Call us today for onsite IT support in Wichita and surrounding areas at affordable rates starting at $70\/hour with no minimums.
