Little Tiny\u00a0Problem<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_543\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.properwichita.com\/consulting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/rj45.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-543\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-543\" title=\"rj45\" src=\"http:\/\/www.properwichita.com\/consulting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/rj45-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"RJ-45 Network Plug\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.properwichita.com\/consulting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/rj45-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.properwichita.com\/consulting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/rj45-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.properwichita.com\/consulting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/rj45.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-543\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RJ-45 Network Plug<\/p><\/div>\n<p>See that little clip on the top of the network jack?\u00a0 It&#8217;s a big deal.\u00a0 Really.\u00a0 Let me elaborate.<\/p>\n<p>I received notification from our Proper Monitoring System that a server at a client had gone offline.\u00a0 I logged into our remote system and had serious trouble logging into any of their servers.\u00a0 That&#8217;s when the calls started coming in.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Email is down<\/li>\n<li>Can&#8217;t access network drives<\/li>\n<li>Citrix isn&#8217;t working<\/li>\n<li>VPN is down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These calls came in from across the U.S., as this was a nationwide customer.\u00a0 Suddenly, my one down server was a major issue.<\/p>\n<p>I went onsite to look at the system in person.\u00a0 For a little background, this network runs on two giant servers that host five virtual servers apiece, with all the storage located on an external NAS device.\u00a0 After rebooting the servers, which had fixed similar issues in the past, I was given a message that the storage required was unavailable.\u00a0 I traced numerous cables from the NAS boxes to the switch at the top of the rack.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_547\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.properwichita.com\/consulting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/cable1.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-547\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-547\" title=\"Wichita IT Support - Cables in Switch\" src=\"http:\/\/www.properwichita.com\/consulting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/cable1-225x300.png\" alt=\"Wichita IT Support - Cables in Switch\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.properwichita.com\/consulting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/cable1-225x300.png 225w, http:\/\/www.properwichita.com\/consulting\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/cable1.png 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wichita IT Support - Cables in Switch<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The light corresponding to the top-left cable was off.\u00a0 Everything else was normal.\u00a0 A little jiggling of the cable and the light came back on.\u00a0 Servers started coming up.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out the phone service had been in, and needed to unplug their cable from the switch.\u00a0 Apparently, during tracing the cables, this one wiggled out just enough to go offline.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 The orange boot on the network cable was depressing the locking clip on the RJ-45 jack and it could be freely removed and reinserted just with a light tug.<\/p>\n<p>When plugging network cables in, make sure the locking mechanism is working!\u00a0 Just give it a light tug once it snaps in.\u00a0 If the locking mechanism is broken off (common), throw the cable away.<\/p>\n<p>So the moral of the case study is:\u00a0 One tiny piece of plastic can take down a nationwide network.\u00a0 Details count!<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for top-notch business or residential IT support in Wichita and surrounding areas, give us a call at (316) 337-5628.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll be happy to discuss your IT needs and how we can help make your systems more efficient and lower your technology costs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For information about our Wichita IT Support Services, visit the homepage at Proper Technology Solutions.
