Wichita IT Support Tip for May 13th, 2011<\/h2>\n

Let’s start at the beginning.\u00a0 Capturing the screen in Windows serves many purposes.\u00a0 Sending a screen capture of an error message to your computer tech is something that will make their day.\u00a0 Using screen captures in tutorials or tips like this one is a great way for your IT person to help people understand a process.\u00a0 How about a quick overview of screen printing before we talk about the Snipping Tool?<\/p>\n

The printscreen button (PrtSc) on your keyboard can be used in two ways.\u00a0 Tap the button and it apparently does nothing.\u00a0 Actually, it’s capturing the screen and putting it on your clipboard.\u00a0 Now you have to do something with it.\u00a0 Open up word, right-click and paste.\u00a0 Voila, your screen capture appears.\u00a0 The other use is to combine the ALT key with PrtSc.\u00a0 This combination only captures the active<\/em> window on the screen (whichever is on top!)\u00a0 Use this combination for your missive to the support tech.\u00a0 You’ll capture and paste just the error message.<\/p>\n

That said, let’s talk about the Snipping Tool.\u00a0 This Windows 7 tool can be used to further specify exactly what you want to copy off your screen.<\/p>\n

Step 1<\/strong>: Open the Snipping Tool by going to the start flag and starting to type the name in the Search<\/strong> box.<\/p>\n

Step 2<\/strong>: Open the Snipping Tool<\/p>\n

Step 3<\/strong>: Follow the simple instructions.\u00a0 Draw a box around whatever on the screen you want to capture.\u00a0 I want an nice picture of the Start Flag.\u00a0 I click and hold, dragging from the top left of an imaginary box around the item to the bottom right.\u00a0 When I let go of the button, it will show me my Snipping.<\/p>\n
